Question:

Hi, I want to take a cruise in January, and I have the choice between a stop in Philipsburg, St-Maarten or Catalina Island in Dominican Republic. How do they compare? Thanks Pierre

Response:

Catalina Island is a private island and St. Maarten is a real port, famous for shopping and some good shore excursions. Carole

St. Marten

Response:

We were in the Dominican and did a day trip to Catalina Island. I was told that years ago there was nothing much there at all. It is a very small island, all we saw was a strip of shack type souvenir stores and a couple of buildings. Lunch was an informal barbecue. You can snorkel and the sand is caribbean nice. I believe we boated around to the other side of the island in maybe 15 minutes. Someone will correct me but I think I was told that half of Catalina was bought by a hotel chain. I don’t recall seeing any residential housing or buildings of substance and would be surprised if more than a handful of people live/stay there overnight. So, unless there is another Catalina Island, I would guess it doesn’t compare at all to Phillipsburg.

I like the Fielding Hotel in Covent Garden.  Nice clean single rooms with lovely private baths are under 80 pounds.  It’s an easy walk to Festival Hall with a beautiful view of St. Paul’s from the pedestrian bridge at night.  You’re also near so many other central London attractions.  Have a great trip! Question:

Any suggestions for a three star hotel in the center of Madrid??   Roger in Vermont

Response:

Reina Victoria, hotel of the bullfighters and centrally located.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Any suggestions for a three star hotel in the center of Madrid??   Roger > in Vermont

Response:

Roger, We just stayed in the Hotel Carlos V near the Puerta Del Sol.  It is centrally located in an area like Times Square in New York.  It is a 1 minute walk to the Gran Via (1 block), 2 minutes from the Puerta Del Sol (where Kilometer Zero is located), about 5 minutes from the Plaza Mayor, a 10 minute walk to the Palacio Real, and a 5 minute Metro ride (on a single line) to the Prado, Reina Sofia, and Thyssen-Bornemissza museums.  Also, there are two full size grocery stores within 2 minutes (in the basements of the two El Cortes Ingles stores), so you can bring back bread, fruit, cheese, meats, fish etc. to snack on. The Hotel Carlos staff is excellent, the environment is lovely, and the rooms are cute (we stayed in a double, our friend stayed in a single). I normally would not stay at a U.S. Hotel chain (it is branded as a Best Western), but this hotel has the character of an independent.  As the area is not the quietest (is centrally located ever quiet?), our only advice is to request an interior room which does not face the streets (there are windows).  We will stay there again.  Even the mini- bar prices were cheap (I’ve never heard of that before).  I can’t recommend it enough! Their website, through which we booked, is http://www.hotelcarlosv.com.  Our rate was cheaper than what they post on the opening page, so do inquire for specific dates. Have fun!  Spain is a wonderful country! Marc > Any suggestions for a three star hotel in the center of Madrid?? Roger > in Vermont

Question:

I am wondering what you guys think the partners will be for the consolidated Aeroplan/Canadian Plus?  Do you guys think AC will keep all the existing hotel, car… partners CP has or the "line up" will be totally changed? Thanks, Steven

No. AC has already thrown out the Royal Bank and Amex. And I suspect any hotel chain which is in direct competition with existing AC partner will be thrown out as well, unless they pay AC more money than their exsiting partner. The ones I suspect will stay are the small unrelated ones such as the YVR parking lot, and the moving company that was with CP etc.

If allergies are your problem, don’t consider Comfort Inn Kensington – the housekeeping was terrible – sheets never changed – mold on the shower curtain.  We stayed there first week in October – the place is beautiful on the outside but the rooms were certainly disappointing and I would never stay there again.

I’d second the recommendation of the Travelinn near Euston.I checked it out two weeks ago when planning a future trip. Very clean, adequate size with toilet and bath en suite. Good location near King’s Cross- about 10 minutes from Russell Square. I also have allergies and I’m booking there for next spring. Before you buy.

Also the Ibis Hotel next to Euston provides a clean and relatively inexpensive (by London standards) accommodation. djb – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I’d second the recommendation of the Travelinn near Euston.I checked it > out two weeks ago when planning a future trip. We have tried a number of hotels in the Bloomsbury area on Cartwright Gardens, the one we would not return to is The Jenkins.  They painted our room while we were out for the day. Don’t know its location from personal experience, but the Travel Inn Euston might be of interest to you.  I stayed in the Travel Inn County Hall and found the room very clean, modern and very similar to a Comfort Inn.  They are on the web at http://www.travelinn.co.uk .  You can also confirm non-smoking rooms at Travel Inns.  I seem to recall some discussion of the Euston location a little while ago, so you might do a search for Travel Inn on DejaNews. — Note:  Please substitute pdg1 in the obvious spot to fix the e-mail address.

Dear Lee The St Giles hotel has been used by British Airways city breaks. I don’t know if that influences you one way or another? Have you considered using BUAC – British Universities Accommodation Consortium, Nottingham University, NG7 2RD? They arrange rentals of halls and university flats in vacation time. The halls belonging to Imperial Colledge give guests access to some sort of health club with a pool. They usually have pictres in their brochures and many halls are quite modern. I have not stayed in Imperial College myself, but I have been in a few halls of residence which were really quite nice. Enjoy the trip.

You might take a look at http://www.tellalltravel.com – it has reviews of many hotels and B&Bs in the London area.  As well as links to many of them. Good luck. L.

We have tried a number of hotels in the Bloomsbury area on Cartwright Gardens, the one we would not return to is The Jenkins.  They painted our room while we were out for the day. We did not ask to change as we were in late and leaving very early, it was our last night there.  Now we usually stay at The Harlingford, also on Cartwright Gardens, nice folks!.   Doug. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > A lot of folks on here have recommended the Jenkins Hotel, I have never stayed there, the last time I was there we > stayed at the Bedford, it was good. >Does anyone have any recommendations on moderately priced (3 star, maybe) >hotels in the Bloomsbury area of London?  Does anybody know of any websites, >other than Yahoo and BHRC Online where I can look hotels up by area? >I’d rather have more of a modern place, even if it’s cookie-cutter design, >because of my allergies ("elegant/traditional" stuff tends to mean dust/mold/ >mildew, all of which I’m allergic to, so I’d prefer something with a more >modern design).  And my biggest criterion is an ensuite bathroom (with both a >shower and a toilet — I’ve heard that some places "ensuite" sometimes means >one or the other but not both). >When I looked at BHRC Online, St. Giles sounded promising.  Has anyone >had any experiences there?  I might be able to swing the Waverley House Hotel >or the Fort Posthouse Bloomsbury, too — any opinions on those?  Really >what I’m looking for would be something like a Comfort Inn or Days Inn >would be here in the US — just something that’s ensuite and clean. >Thanks! >—- >  Senior Applications Programmer/Analyst    |  A minor form of despair >  Library Computing Services, Penn.

Hello,     I’d suggest the Harlingford Hotel in Cartwright Gardens. It was very clean, the breakfast was good and it is centrally located between Russell Square and King’s Cross/St. Pancras tube stations. The double rooms are GBP L82 per night. However, I do suggest you inquire as to the size of the bathroom in the room you are assigned. As this was originally a private home some ensuites are literally formerly closets and can have a shower where you can barely turn around in it, and others are much roomier. V

We stayed at the Avalon in Cartwright Gardens, and your description of the Harlingford also fits it.  May I add that Cartwright Gardens is also quite close to Euston Station. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Agreed. >Doug Sally & Nick. > Hello, >     I’d suggest the Harlingford Hotel in Cartwright Gardens. Question:

X’cacel, a critical sea turtle nesting beach 67 miles south of Cancun, has been sold to the Sol Melia hotel chain for a tourist development. Many people came to X’cacel to experience one of the last remaining unspoiled areas, swim in the cenote (natural well), and witness the turtles. X’cacel was a site where environmental education was taught over the last 10 years. It was one of few, if not the only, beach in the area that was open to the public (there was a small fee). The area also is home to 21 endemic species and approximately 40 protected species of plants and animals (Manatee, Tropical Porcupine, Margay, Jaguarundi, Grison, Northern Tamandua, Buccaneer Palm, Mangrove, Casque- headed Tree Frog, Morelet’s Crocodile, Spiny-Tailed Iguana, Great Blue Heron, Reddish Egret, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, etc.). Some of the protected species are both threatened and endemic. There is an amazing quantity of protected species on this strip of land little over one (1) mile long. If you are interested in more details, want to write a few letters, or send some emails to help save X’cacel just send me an email. Mary Louise Before you buy.

I guess I question the Mexican government as to why they sold this property to a resort chain.   Money talks!!

Question:

Any personal opinions re these two Hobart Hotels?

Response:

Both Hotels are good properties.  Lenna is an historic mansion with adjacent hotel block very near Salamanca Place and Battery Point. Good accommodation. Grand Chancellor is relatively new by Hobart standards and much larger with all mod coms and is on the Hobart Wharf. Both are walking distance to Hobart. Restaurants in both hotels are good. Really depends on what you are looking for but either hotel would be good choice. Regards from, ‘Under Downunder’ – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Any personal opinions re these two Hobart Hotels?

Response:

Both hotels are of a high standard.  Lenna is probably more homely, as it is more a guest house than a hotel, and is situated in the historic area of Battery Point.  The Grand Chancellor is right on the waterfront, but is just another multi-national hotel chain in my opinion. I can’t comment on the prices, but if I wasn’t concerned about price, I’d stay at Lenna.  But that’s because I spend so much time in big, characterless hotels so much when travelling with work, and so prefer something a little more homely when I’m on holidays.
