I would recommend Newtown or Chippendale if you are using it as a base for finding longer term accommodation in reasonable proximity to Sydney University.  Newtown is developing as a suburb with attitude and Chippendale is undecided.  Both are within energetic walking distance even on their outskirts of The University. Julio, Kings Cross is noisy almost all night (though close by red light options if that’s where your taste runs). Why not a B&B in the Glebe area, not far from Uni, and close to mass transit that will take you where you want to go? I’ve seen ads for $30-$55/night in Glebe B&Bs. I’m sure the Uni housing office can help, either in a private B&B or one of the colleges. Back to Kings Cross, my family enjoyed a lovely time high in the Hotel Koala near Oxford and Kings Cross, paying much less than $100 for a one bedroom suite with kitchenette. Maybe that’s an option you’d like to try. Cheers! J

There is one place just across the street from U of S that I stayed at this past June – it’s called University Motor Inn on Arundel St. which parallels Parramatta Road westward from the intersection of Derwent for a short distance. The accomodations are decent and I kind of liked the place, but if you are concerned with the rate, it may not be suitable for you as I paid the equivalent of $90 (US) per night. I stayed there for 6 days so you can imagine what kind of charges appeared on the next month’s Mastercard statement…..heheh.. —

Well, I was already leaning heavily against Kings Cross, I guess that cinches it. Chippendale seems like a very convenient location, but I’m not familiar with it and am a little concerned because of its proximity to Redfern. Any opinions on the safety there? Generally speaking, is Chippendale a decent place to spend a few weeks? Sydney Uni isn’t in Redfern, Julio, that’s just the nearest train station.  Sydney Uni is surrounded by Glebe, Chippendale, Darlington, Newtown, and Camperdown. >Currently I’m trying to choose between the Australian Sunrise Lodge on >King St in Newtown, and the Metro Motor Inns in Chippendale and Kings >Cross.

I know where those are.  The Sunrise is about halfway between Newtown Station and St Peters Station.  It’s a moderate walk to Sydney Uni, or a short ride on the 422 bus.  In rush hours it’s quicker to walk.  The Metro is on City Road, opposite Victoria Park.  It’s a stones throw from Sydney Uni. >I’ve heard varying opinions of Kings Cross – is it a safe place to >stay?  What is Chippendale like?

Kings Cross is the tourist trap part of town.  It’s not one of my favourite places, but it is one of my boss’s favourite places. I’ve lived in Chippendale for seven years now.  It’s very convenient for Newtown, Glebe, the city, and the uni.

Julio… KK is okay, but be wise, don’t look for trouble. It certainly isn’t one of Sydney’s safest locations…but lets face it you can find trouble anywhere if you look hard enough.. Dean

At the moment, there’s an axe murderer on the loose in kings Cross. And it usually isn’t much safer at other times either! Rhys

The Sunrise Lodge is at the wrong end of Newtown, I would suggest you choose the Chippendale Metro Motor Inn – as it is within walking distance of the Uni. Kings Cross always is cheap area, but the risks are there.  The ax murderer referred to in the other post is a problem – but this could happen anywhere.  There still are lots of people staying in the Kings Cross hotels, you just need to be a little more careful at the moment.
