Question:
Thinking of a long weekend at the very end of May. I realise part of the steam railway is not running. Living west of London the choice seems to be between: 1) Flying from Luton (also considered Gatwick, Birmingham, Southampton and Bristol but Luton times are acceptable as is the fare). 2) Driving or train to Liverpool/Heysham and getting the boat Unless we drive to the boat, while I appreciate the transport on the Island is good (and it’s part of the attraction) I’d probably hire a car on arrival. Don’t need to stay in town and if we have a car staying near the railways isn’t really an issue. Think we’d prefer a good b and b or farm to an hotel (but I’m prepared to be convinced). Considering travelling Thursday and returning Monday (if by ferry with car to get the 5 day return) or Thursday/Tuesday by air ex Luton. Anybody care to comment whether I’m allowing enough time to ride on a reasonable selection of trains/trams as well as seeing the Island? Anybody care to recommend accommodation?

Sounds nice. Douglas isn’t very exciting but the countryside is. And it’s real nice in May. Was there last y in May > Considering travelling Thursday and returning Monday (if by ferry with car > to get the 5 day return) or Thursday/Tuesday by air ex Luton. > Anybody care to comment whether I’m allowing enough time to ride on a > reasonable selection of trains/trams as well as seeing the Island? I managed to cover them all in two days and I think one is feasible but that’s probably little too much. Perhaps one day for the steam r and one for the electric with a side trip to Snaefell. You may also consider a trip in the 610mm Groudle Glen railway (from Groudle on the electric running in the weekend only) and a visit to the "lady Isabella" pumping wheel at Laxey. Lennart Petersen

When I was there in 1955 (!) in the RAF my British Driving licence wasn’t accepted. I had to get an International one. Mike — M.J.Powell

Hope you realise that the Isle of Man TT Festival will be on during this time and accommodation will be almost impossible to obtain, even this far out. Kind regards Dave Milligan
