It must be one of the UK’s best kept secrets (in the USA) that getting from Gatwick to London by train is a shitload faster and more pleasant than getting in from Heathrow anyway. andy

We had a different problem with BA recently.  Despite having purchased our "low end" tickets months in advance, we were not permitted to reserve seats until 3 hours prior to departure (London – Washington, DC). Although we were able to avoid the smoking section, my wife, mother, daughter and I all got "interior" (i.e., non-aisle) seats — and were separated from one another.  I told the BA rep we would never fly BA again — and was told (in essence) "too bad".  BA has a hammerlock on slots at Heathrow; I guess we’ll just have to go to Gatwick, Manchester, or Glasgow next time.  Really horrible service IMHO..
