check either Flight Centres or STA travel.  Both offer discount fares, but slim customer service.  This is not a bad thing, it just that to offer cheap fares they cannot spend time helping you organize your trip. Tom

I recently travelled to the US and my flights were arranged by STA.  The fares were very cheap AUD$1,081.00  + taxes etc Melbourne to LA.  There were a couple of requirements, one being that we had to take an internal flight in the US.  (This was low season, and we had to pay by a certain date to get the cheap fares)  I cannot speak highly enough of the service provided by STA.  Our agent spent a lot of time looking for both cheap fares and tours within the US for us. Response:

Was that a return fare Julie??? Which airline did you fly with?? The cheapest I have found so far is with Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong, around $1700 return including taxes but you have to spend a night in HK and connect the next day. Not sure if they throw in the overnight accommodation for you or not. JAL have a fare which is only a little more expensive and you can fly via either Tokyo or Osaka and they include the cost of your overnight hotel stay in the fare. www.travelshop.com.au has both those fares I mentioned and seem to be cheaper than both Flight Centre and STA as far as I have been able to find. Flight Centre say they will beat any quoted international fare, including internet fares, by $20 so you can shop around and then go there for the further discount. Good luck Kate — Posted via http://britishexpats.com

Response:

Yes it was a return ticket.  We paid in December, 2002 for our trip in March, 2003. We travelled Qantas.  The fare was called a construction fare.  I don’t really know what that means but the consultant at STA did it all. Cheers, Julie

Does anyone know of a website where you can bid for hotel rooms in Australia and New Zealand?  I’ve tried priceline.com and hotwire.com and neither of them seem to offer hotels for Australia or NZ.

Try http://www.wotif.com I have had some success using them here in Australia.  They list hotels in various countries, states, cities etc. with lists of offers over the succeeding two weeks or so.  Some quite good discounts are available, especially in some 4 star places in Sydney and Melbourne due to a down turn in the market from reduced tourism as a result of SARS. When you make a booking, you need to have a credit card to pay the accommodation plus a small booking charge (under $4.00) on-line. You also need a printer to print a copy of the transaction or of the confirmation email they send, because you need that as a voucher (although just quoting the transaction number and proving your identity would probably suffice when you book in).  As you have pre-paid the room, all you will have to pay the hotel for are extras – sometimes the deal may include breakfast. Can anyone please recommend a hotel, or pension, in Munich, 3 stars, that is within walking distance of Theresenweise? I am realizing that it is getting late for booking something during Oktoberfest, so if you know of something that still has room (I need 2 doubles) that would be great. If you do not know of anything specific, a site that has a good listing of them by location would be appreciated. Expedia and Travelocity have very few listed and it is hard to determine location easily. Priceline is suggesting $83 US as the average retail price, which seems very low, and it isn’t accounting for Oktoberfest, I presume. Would it even be worth a try? Danke schoen!

"Within walkin distance" will be hard to find: these rooms are usually booked out up to two years beforehand. And with all the street noise, the ambulances, police sirens, drunken localss, screaming Italians, etc. around, they are not really a prefered place to stay :-) I have checked a few prices and availability for two double rooms in Munich during the Oktoberfest dates. Depending on the comfort and location you will currently have no problem to find accommodation. Prices start at EUR 60 for a double room in a Munich suburb (don’t worry, there is an excellent public transport service to the Theresienwiese, either by Underground, Tramway, Bus or S-Bahn = speed train) up to EUR 300 in a 5-star city centre hotel. Just check the website www.hrs.de and change to the English menue and surf the rooms: I have just found 60 free hotels for the weekend and 113 for mid-week dates. Ben

www.accomline.com I use these sometimes.  They can normally give cheaper prices than going direct to the hotel and/or US based travel/accom companies (they are OZ based I believe).  However, some of their accommodation prices may require you to shop around to get a better deal.  Also, if you become a member you get extra discount.  Not a lot of discount but a discount all the same. I have found them very efficient also. MC

We have a bit of a problem to find a reasonably priced ( < GBP 75 / night) hotel / B&B that has availability in Edinburgh for 7 – 10 June. Any advice? Thanks in advance. Sjoerd

You could look here – <http://www.aboutscotland.com/edin/west.html> If you don’t need to be right in the town centre, it should be easier to find something in your price range.  The Corstorphine area (west of the centre) has a number of quite good, reasonably priced BnBs. If you can’t find anything, I can look through my notes from last year. Sheila Mackay Viemeister

The "accommodation" section at www.edinburgh.org lets you search for B&Bs in Edinburgh. The most centrally located ones will have low postcodes – EH1 or EH3 – there’s about a dozen listed, many with their own websites. Although they have a Contact form they don’t seem to offer the same enquiry/booking service as other tourist offices, perhaps they can if you ask. You can check the establishment’s postcode on streetmap.co.uk for a location map. The only event I can see happening on those dates that might attract a lot of visitors booking accommodation is Mark Knopfler at the Playhouse on the 8th. If you are interested in art, Royal Scottish Academy Annual Exhibition ends on the 11th, at the City Art Centre, 2 Market Street – behind Waverley train station on the Old Town side. Owain

Swindon? SWINDON?! Well yes it’s convenient (ie easy to get away from), but I can think of absolutely nothing else to recommend it.  Unless you like 7 little mini-roundabouts arranged in a circle with lots of cars going round them, mostly without a clue about who has right of way……. — kathie who has to go to Swindon about once a week :-(

Why not stay within one Cotswolds villages? Bath is worth at least a few days for it’s own merits, but by all means stay within the Cotwolds if that’s what you’re going to see.  There are reasonable prices to be found regardless of location, so it’s best to choose among the most conveniently located ones, such as Moreton-in-Marsh, Stow-on-the-Wold, etc.

I wouldn’t highly recommend Gloucester (though it does have a great cathedral) or Swindon.

Swindon?

Question:

I did that trip last year and stayed in a Gasthaus in Wremen, half way between Cuxhaven and Bremerhaven along the coast. This place was in walking distance to the harbor, which is a site to see at low tide. During my 14 day by car trip, my wife, grand daughter and I only stayed in a motel/hotel twice. Mostly due to lack of time or darkness. In these B&B we always got breakfast and believe me, they where not "doughnuts and coffee". Time permitting, would do it again in a heartbeat again. Hope it helps Regards, em_CT
