Hotels FAQ » Hotel Accommodation » Info on Cuba – Beach and Culture
Question:
Hello, Thinking about a trip to Cuba, but not too interested in spending the whole time at some all inclusive resort. Would like to spend some time at the beach, but would also like to explore the cities and culture of Cuba. What are the prices like for accommodation in Havana? Do tourists have to pay for everything in American dollars. I know Cuba receives a lot of precipitation in June. Does it rain a lot? Does most rain fall overnight? Any information would be appreciated. Kind regards, Ken

There’s a wide range of accommodation possibilities in Havana, from the elaborate 1930’s style hotels to basic rooms in private houses/apartments. We stayed at the Hotel Seville which had very nice patio area and was well located in Havana Vieja. The rooms had bath/shower and while they might not have been quite to "american standard", we very much enjoyed the beautiful old building. Our room was quite noisy being just over the Prado, but quieter ones would be on either side. We only stayed in the hotel 2 nights, so didn’t worry. Price as I recall was not far from US$120/night [don't remember exactly]. We paid by (non-US issued) VISA card. Later we found a casa particulare in Havana by recommendation from people we stayed with in the western provice. The casas are generally around US$25 for a double, including breakfast. The inside of apartments can be better than they appear they’d be from the outside, and should have a hot shower. You’d have to pay US$ to them. You should also spend time outside Havana, and could conceivably drive to the coast in the western province or down to Trinidad etc. Private houses all over are about the same price ($20-25 double) and often will throw in an excellent dinner for a few dollars. The quality of places outside Havana can be quite good (if you look around). You would have to be willing to try and work in Spanish, since most people outside hotels would not be very able in English. — Ken Tough
