Hotels FAQ » Hotel Accommodation » Hamburg – worth a stop?

Question:

Going via rail from Amsterdam to Copenhagen in Sep. Considering a stop in Hamburg. Is it worth a diversion? Or perhaps there is somewhere else between A and C worth a day or 2. I realize I’m not laying out what I like to do/see, but I like to get a lot of answers, general stuff. Thank you.

If you’re for beautiful ancient houses: no, that was all destroyed about 40 years ago, if you’re for everything else what a city can offer, like museums, shopping, going out, etc.: YES. — Ernst Kers The Tram of Porto http://home.planet.nl/~ekers/

Hamburg was heavily bombed during the war so is mostly just a modern city.  The major tourist attraction is the street where the prostitutes sit in the show windows. Lots of bars since it’s a major port. Not sure what route the train takes to go from A to C.  There are some interesting museums of ship and ww2 plane wrecks the Dutch found when they drained the Ijsel but don’t know if you can get to them easily by train. If your train goes by way of Cologne (probably doesn’t but it might not be too much of a detour):  Get out and visit the cathedral (Dom) right next to the station and the nearby German-Roman museum if you have time.  Pretty expensive town to stay in tho and a half day or so should be enough time.  Rest of it is just a big city. "Is it worth a diversion?" – What a question — of course it is! Hamburg is, as a recent thread will testify, a quite wonderful, and even beautiful city.  It is full of parks and other green areas, history in the form of the different churches and the "Rathous" and of course the Harbour. I absolutely love Hamburg, and so it seems, do many other people.  The public transport system is such that you will be able to get a feel for the main sights in-between trains.  Visit the "Rathous" (Town Hall), St. Pauli landing stages, and the TV tower for a view of the whole place.  Your main problem will be not having enough time to see it all – which is quite impossible! If you are travelling on a weekend, consider staying for Sunday morning, or more precisely, the Fish Market.  If you like a good market, hearty breakfasts, beer at seven in the morning, and loud Rock music then that is the place for you!  It starts getting busy after half-seven.
