How cheap? If you don’t want to go the backpacker route, try the GoodEarth Hotel/Motel, 345 Wickham Terrace, just up the hill from Central Station. I stayed there just 2 weeks ago. It cost $65 a night for 1 or 2 people, through http://www.needitnow.com.au/ (regular price listed as about twice that). One buffet breakfast was included (not sure of the cost of breakfast for the 2nd person). Quite a reasonable place, but accommodation and breakfast. The only problem is the hill is a bit much (going up) if you have heavy luggage — no big deal without luggage. (I took a taxi, cost $5.50.) I have no association with that motel, or with needitnow. Just a satisfied customer!
