We have in mind a small apartment; or a room with > bathroom plus > kitchen; or a pensione. We will be there from about April 19 to May 5. > All suggestions gratefully received.
Well I just lent out all my Italy guidebooks, but the highly reliable Frommer’s cheap guide highly recommends the Piccolo Etruria (sp?), which the say is a steal, having recently renovated and kept the prices the same, as well as the Chiusarelli. I stayed at the Chiusarelli (not as central as the Piccolo Etruria) and enjoyed watching the soccer match from the local stadium out my hotel window. No kitchen at either place, though.

We stayed there in late June ‘96 and they did not require 1/2 board. The rates (in the ‘99 Michelin guide) are 200/240000. The room we stayed in was very nice & large, and the garden in back was a welcome place to rest. One of my best friends stayed there this past Sept. & he liked it very much. It’s listed in the current Karen Brown guide. I couldn’t imagine a better located place in Siena. We could even drive to the piazza in front of the hotel to unload our bags. My wife accidentally left some souvenirs at the hotel, and they mailed them to us in the USA. — Stu Dudley San Mateo (San Francisco), Ca Before you buy.

I am glad they dropped the half board — but the room rates are WAY up from the days we stayed there. It is a lovely place. Our room had leaded glass casement windows, painted beams and a terrific view of the Tuscan countryside. And as you note, the garden is a great place to relax.

We stayed there about 10 years ago and loved it EXCEPT they required half board and the food was poor in a town filled with cool restaurants — it was like eating in the college cafeteria. I also heard that they had rennovated it recently and it was more expensive. Id love to hear form someone who has been there in the last couple years — it is a lovely building and a great location.
