Peter I think your best bet would be Veere, a small village on the Veerse Meer. Old, picturesque. Don’t know about accommodation though. In summer you’ll have trouble if you haven’t booked. There is a Youth Hostel nearby though. Situated in a castle. Zierikzee is also neat! The ferry goes every half hour from Breskens to Vlissingen and you should have no waiting time with a bicycle. With a car could take a bit longer on public holidays. Have fun. Gerrit

Besides mussels, that is. I’ve been wanting to take a 2-3 day trip somewhere quiet and coastal, and Zeeland seems like it would fit the bill. So, if someone could please talk me into it (or out of it), I’d be much obliged. Specifically, I’m interested in seaside villages with waterfront accommodations that are not too expensive or overbooked. Picturesqueness is an added bonus. Swimming/boating too. Also, is the Vlissingen ferry very crowded on summer weekends? What are average wait times like? I’d most likely be making the crossing with my bicycle. Thanks, -Peter in Brussels

I like Zeeland. Places to stay include Domburg and Veere on Walcheren, Cadzand in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, Goedereede and Ouddorp on Goeree-Overflakkee (technically Zuid Holland province) and Zierikzee on Schouwen Duiveland. Probably Domburg is the best for a beach holiday (high dunes), but it is a place where many older people go, so if you like partying you better like bingo.
The ferry between Vlissingen and Breskens can be busy for cars, but as a cyclist you shouldn’t have to wait. IIRC at most times there are about two ferries / hour. Quaint and interesting towns to visit include Middelburg, Veere, Zierikzee, Goedereede, Middelharnis. The Neeltje Jans exhibition is interesting to those that are into engineering and huge waterworks. I would post this in nl.reizen where many Dutch people read the posts. Ron — Outgoing mail is AVG certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
