Hotels FAQ » Hostel » year 2000 in Sydney
Question:
Hi, I am planning to spend the 31 of december 1999 and new years eve in Sydney – not alone, of course – I am just organizing this trip for a group of about 20 to 50 friends. My basic idea is to rent a backpacker in Sydney as a "base camp" and then celebrating somewhere around there in Sydney. I heard last year that Bondi Beach is the place to be on days like this, with huge backpacker parties etc … Is that correct? Does anybody know good backpackers in Sydney (preferably with fax / E-Mail)? Or any mid-price-style hotels who take reservations for such a long time in advance (my feeling is that it will be more than crowded – it will be chaotic. So I better plan 2 years ahead). Does anybody have similar plans and would like to share experiences?? Any comments are highly appreciated!! cu Mike from Stuttgart, Germany by the way: Does anybody know the adress, E-Mail, fax, exact name … of the backpacker lobby organization in Australia (the ones who publish all the books about all the different backpackers etc)?

You are correct that the backpackers spend time at Bondi. On Christmas Day they had a big get together this year. The year 2000 is expected to be big here, and you are right to plan now as many downtown venues are already booked as the "thing to do" is to see the harbor bridge fireworks. Some info I have on what you are looking for follows: Moderate ($80 – $180 Aussie) Hotel Bondi, 61 2 9930 3271 ( hotel with "raucous" pub) front rooms have ocean view Budget ($55 – $85 Aussie) Kirketon Hotel, Kings Cross 61 2 9360 4333 Hostels ($15 – 20 per person Aussie) Lamrock Hostel, Bondi Beach 61 2 9365 0221 (One block from beachfront) Manly Beach Resort Backpackers, Manly Beach 61 2 9977 4188 ( a little more family oriented beach but apparently newly renovated rooms and you have the super fast "jet cat ferry" to the city Jolly Swagman Hostels, Kings Cross – call Sydney Central Backpackers 61 2 9357 4733
