Question:

A couple of years ago, we stayed south just outside Verona proper by about 5 to 10 minutes in Ca di David.  Small hotel (think it was named Hotel Belfiore) in a small town.  Clean with magnificent food.  I think if you stop at  the church on the main square in Ca di David, you will be within 1/2 block of it.  Ask any of the merchants opposite the church; they can tell you where it is.  Also easy parking. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > We’re flying to Munich, renting a car and driving to Verona to begin our > Italian vacation.  Would you agree that Verona is a good base of > operations to spend a few days in the area?  Any recommendations for a > relatively inexpensive place to stay?  We have only one requirement: > cleanliness.  Fodor’s recommends Torcolo near Piazza Bra.

Response:

We stayed in the Youth Hostel in a family room (not the dorm), since we were a family of four. It’s in a restored villa.  The room was small and cramped, but clean, and the beds were fine.  We didn’t need to be members (at least for the one night we were there). It was fun talking to the other (and mostly younger) travelers at breakfast. The hostel is recommended in Rick Steves, believe it or not!                                                 — roy – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > We’re flying to Munich, renting a car and driving to Verona to begin our > Italian vacation.  Would you agree that Verona is a good base of > operations to spend a few days in the area?  Any recommendations for a > relatively inexpensive place to stay?  We have only one requirement: > cleanliness.  Fodor’s recommends Torcolo near Piazza Bra.

Thanks for that tip.  I should have emphasized that, as we are driving, a central location is not necessary.  We’ve found in the past that prices on the outskirts are often considerably cheaper. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > A couple of years ago, we stayed south just outside Verona proper by about 5 to > 10 minutes in Ca di David.  Small hotel (think it was named Hotel Belfiore) in a > small town.  Clean with magnificent food.  I think if you stop at  the church on > the main square in Ca di David, you will be within 1/2 block of it.  Ask any of > the merchants opposite the church; they can tell you where it is.  Also easy > parking. > We’re flying to Munich, renting a car and driving to Verona to begin our > Italian vacation.  Would you agree that Verona is a good base of > operations to spend a few days in the area?  Any recommendations for a > relatively inexpensive place to stay?  We have only one requirement: > cleanliness.  Fodor’s recommends Torcolo near Piazza Bra.

Seeing as though you will be driving you have two major options getting from Munich to Verona.  Coming down through Tarvisio northeast of Venice, then west to Verona, or through Innsbruck, Bolzano and basically south to Verona.  Coming down A-22 to A-4, I’d get off of the Autostarda A-22 and head for the the SS-11 state road that runs from Milano to Verona.  Staring about 7 miles outside of the city limits of Verona, you’ll be in the town of Bosco di Sona, from there in to Verona there are a few hotels that are nic, and very convenient to Verona, Lago di Garda (Autostrada’s for side trips to Padova, Venice, etc…) or you can get to Lago di Garda on SS-11 (about a 15 minute drive on SS-11.  (I use to live in a house on SS-11 at the start of the town of Bosco di Sona, at the intersection for the towns of Palazzolo and Sona).  There is also a nice clean inexpensive hotel on the main road from Bussolengo Center to Verona called Hotel Garda. It is about 500 meters from the Verona city limits.  Staying on the western side (Bosco area) is very convenient to numerous day trips of the area, plus it has easier access to the center (old section of Verona) than the other out laying areas. Have a good trip, and enjoy the area.  It’s interesting and has a lot to offer.                          Take care,                              Barry… (NOTE:  From Address is SPAM protected)

We’re flying to Munich, renting a car and driving to Verona to begin our Italian vacation.  Would you agree that Verona is a good base of operations to spend a few days in the area?  Any recommendations for a relatively inexpensive place to stay?  We have only one requirement: cleanliness.  Fodor’s recommends Torcolo near Piazza Bra.
