Response:
1. Taiwan Accomodations Taiwan is no longer cheap. There is a Youth Hostel near the train station, but is often very crowded. There are many "cheap" hotels around town (Taipei) which go for 2000-3000 NT$. But be aware that many of these are "love hotels" which rent by the hour. Outside of major cities there are many government-run camp sites (sort of rustic YMCAs) called "Jyou Guo Tuan" which are cheap and great places to stay if you want to see the countryside. 2. Places to go In Taipei: the Palace museum, of course. There’s a great Paraguayan guitarist playing nightly at the Sherwood hotel. (Say "hi" from Neil if you see him!). The coast road from Taipei to Hua Lien and further south to Tai Dong is worth seeing. From Hua Lien, you can go to Tai Rou Ge and see the gorge which the Taiwanese modestly compare to the grand canyon. There is a cheap Youth Hostel there. 3. Working in Taiwan English teachers are constantly in demand and can earn well. No Chinese necessary. Buy a copy of the local English-language paper (The Post, I believe) to find the addresses and phone numbers for the various schools. They are always advertising.
