Hotels FAQ » Hostel » ST. MORITZ and ZERMATT ACCOMMODATION?
Question:
My wife and I are staying overnight in St. Moritz (30/10) and Zermatt (1/11) . We are travelling the Glacier express on 31/10. We would like ‘ lower’ cost accom, clean quiet double with private facilities near the train stations. Any recommendations (if you’ve stayed there recently) and cost, please? Thanks, Andrew and Libby

Whew! Two of the most popular and most expensive ski resorts in Switzerland, but it shouldn’t be a problem as you’re going out of season — ask, and you might even get special rates. One of the cheapest places in Zermatt (outside of the Youth Hostel) is the Hotel Bahnhoff — come out of the station and it’s on a corner to your left. In St. Moritz, you’re going to have to walk or catch a taxi. The station is below the town, so it’s an uphill walk. Go past the Badrutt’s Palace — the top place to stay — and continue over the roundabout and down the hill towards the lake. You’ll pass the Britania pub on your left, and about 50-100 metres later there’s a restaurant/hotel pension on your right (I forget the name, and don’t have time to look through our notes) — but it’s clean and reasonably cheap by Swiss standards; if they’re open. BTW — The Glacier Express is a wonderful train journey. Have fun! http://www.travelnotes.org/

When in Zermatt I always stay at the Hotel Jagerhof. Nothing in Zermatt is too far from the train station to walk. The Jagerhof is away from the noisey and congested tourist areas. If you want to go and be with the masses it is a ten minute walk. I paid about $80 a day for my wife and I the last time we were there (two years ago). We have never had any trouble getting a room that has a balcony view of the Materhorn. No matter where you stay make sure you can get a room with a view. I’ll be there next June! Allen
