Question:
In late July, galway has an event called Race Week. It is supposed to be quite a show. All businesses close, except the bars of course. They also have a music festival week that had wonderful music. contact Ireland tourism to find out the dates. Galway is definitely a fun town. I will reply with another town that is directly north of the Cliffs of Moher that was quite charming and is a magnet for budding musicians. Great scenery and a few wonderful pubs.

Hello Dave, While passing through Limerick you might consider visiting Dolan’s Pub on the Dock Road. There are many excellent venues for Irish music here in Limerick, but Dolan’s is one of the pubs with music every night of the year. There is live traditional musaic there every night, usually beginning at about 9:30. You should consider starting earlier in order to get place to sit, and don’t be disappointed if nothing seems to be happening by 9:30. It just happens, and by 10:00 the place will be alive with music. By 10:30 it will be packed shoulder to shoulder. If you like you can have an excellent evening meal in Dolan’s too but not where you sit to hear music. So be sure to start eating before 7:00 and themn move out to the pub prober to get your place for the music. From all your postings it is clear that you are doing an excellent job of researching you holiday, and we are sure that you will enjoy it immensely as a result. You will find traditional music in pubs in towns all over the west of Ireland. I can never quite understand why Doolin is always mentioned as being" famous" for trad music as, so far as I can ascertain, Doolin is only a very small village with only 2 pubs. Galway City and Dingle have far more pubs with this kind of music. Maybe the fascination with the music in Doolin lies in the fact that one of the pubs is within staggering distance of the backpacker hostel ? Barry

I haven’t been in Doolin for over ten years, and I didn’t go there for the music, but I stayed in the Doolin Hostel. (There were two hostels there, but this is the one near the pub.) There were at least two groups of traditional Irish musicians also staying in the hostel who had come great distances to join in the music-making and listen to the music. I would imagine they had good reasons to be there. Also the town is in a beautiful spot, the hostel was one of the most fun places I’ve ever spent a few days, and the people around there were friendly and witty. The hostel was sort of a community meeting place. It’s probably a combination of all these factors that brings musicians and music lovers there. — Barbara Vaughan Princeton University email my first intitial my last name at my university dot edu (Or reply to dejanews email address)
