Bring your money, your passport, your camera, your tickets and anything else with significant monetary value with you.  Leave your backpack behind.  If it is a *youth* hostel you are talking about…..many have a locked area you can put them in during the day.  Otherwise, leave it in your locked hostal/hotel room.  Put dirty underwear and stinky socks near the top :-)   I always lock my pack when I am out of the room….if you really are concerned, buy a small lock cord and lock your pack to the bed frame (or something big). As valuable as your pack is to you, IMHO most people will not go through the trouble to stealing something as conspicuous as a pack. I can guarantee to you, once you lug that thing around for a while…..you will start to have moments where your pray someone *does* steal it.  I even spent one early morning trying to teach my pack to meet me at the hostal…..

In London at least, and at Paris Gare du Nord, luggage storage is either at a staffed office or at least in supervised lockers.  This is primarily as a precaution against terrorism but should also mean that your backpack is a bit safer than it might otherwise be Martin — City University Business School,  London, UK Fax   (020) 7040 8628    http://www.city.ac.uk/martin
