My pref is to get outta Amsterdam & get accommodations in Utrecht — you’ll spend half the money or less (e.g. $12/night if you can handle the best cleanest friendliest most helpful most wonderful hostel accommodations know to man at Hostel Strowis right off of the Janskirchof busstop….), and AMS Centraal is a minor (30 min? see dutch rail planner at http://nsr.ns.nl/reisplan2.asp) hop on the train, runs almost 24 hrs/day. Utrecht feels about a g’zilllion times safer than the AMS Centraal district too, FYI.  It’s a charming smaller city that is worth exploring in  it’s own right… Goede dag!! Eric

Traveling to Amsterdam the first weekend in March.  Can someone recommend a reasonable ($100-ish), comfortable, no-frills hotel near Central Station? The last time I was there over the summer I found a place towards the red light district (all of a 3 minute walk from the station, can’t recall name but was good).  And would I have trouble not making reservations at this time of year but just walking in? TIA, Ezra

Hi, 1st try would be the Ibis Central 2nd maybe the botel… but quite frankly if I couldn’t get a room at the Ibis I’d stay in another neighborhood. I usually stay near wetering schans… not close enough to walk for sure… but the tram is so convenient to the hotel I actually walk less than if I’d stayed at the Victoria (?) right across the street from the station. and I can’t afford the Victoria – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Traveling to Amsterdam the first weekend in March.  Can someone recommend a > reasonable ($100-ish), comfortable, no-frills hotel near Central Station? > The last time I was there over the summer I found a place towards the red > light district (all of a 3 minute walk from the station, can’t recall name > but was good).  And would I have trouble not making reservations at this > time of year but just walking in? > TIA, > Ezra

I’m a 60ish grandmother and I stayed at the Amstel Botel last March.  It was convenient, cheap and safe.  We were on the water side, on the top floor at one end.  I have heard that at times it is noisy.
