Question:
Hi, we are going to Port Douglas in late March/early April, and were wondering if anyone had any recommendations for things to do – tour companies & restaurants etc to go with and to avoid etc etc. thanks K&G
Response:
Poseidon for reef trips are great, only 40 on the boat. Avoid Quicksiler unless you like crowds. Also the Willow yacht for superb food, but it only goes to the low isles which are spoilt by too much trampling on! Go for the sunset cruise. Take a trip up to Cow Bay and sleep in the rainforest at Crocodylus backpackers for a great experience, their night eco walk is suberb as is their breakfast kayak paddle. Chilli Jam is a great place to eat as is the Wharf area. Breakfast with the birds is not to be missed! Take the walk in Mossman gorge through the rainforest. Dee is correct…however We loved Quicksilver…take the bigger of the 2 cats…Plus their pontoons are huge and well catered…all crew were exsperts at something …so they told us…and the best value for money was the Services Club right on the waters edge..you can touch the boats as they come in….Dave… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Hi, > we are going to Port Douglas in late March/early April, and were wondering > if anyone had any recommendations for things to do – tour companies & > restaurants etc to go with and to avoid etc etc. > thanks > K&G

ooops – bad time to be recommending quiksilver now… (they ‘lost’ and 80 yr old american tourist despite supposedly following all the correct procedures!) I think we will go with a smaller boat anyway – now all I need to do is convince geoff half a day of seasickness is enough for me *LOL* thanks Dave! K

If you value a good nights sleep, stay away from the trendy boutique style accommodation in the centre of the main street rubbish trucks empty the big green wheely bins full of bottles from the restrauants etc at 2am in the morning – the din is shattering -( after just having got to sleep when the noise from the bars and clubs shut down) you just get back to sleep again and the council workers start at 7am "sweeping" the street with those blowers (they sound louder than a chainsaw) there is also a lot of building in the centre of town, that also starts up at 7am (including the cement trucks) but find a peaceful place to stay and the place is wonderful and make sure you enjoy a bucket of prawns and a stubby on the waterfront – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Dee is correct…however We loved Quicksilver…take the bigger of the 2 > cats…Plus their pontoons are huge and well catered…all crew were > exsperts at something …so they told us…and the best value for money was > the Services Club right on the waters edge..you can touch the boats as they > come in….Dave… > Hi, > we are going to Port Douglas in late March/early April, and were wondering > if anyone had any recommendations for things to do – tour companies & > restaurants etc to go with and to avoid etc etc. > thanks > K&G

Go to Salsa, Going Bananas & Mango Jam for dinner. If you can afford to do it go for a helicopter ride over the reef …. spectacular enjoy yourself!

Karen and Geoff, I was there in October and highly recommend the Waverider boats to see the reef. Three boats of snorkellers only with about 20 passengers on each boat. Great people and a wonderful, gourmet lunch. Snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef was a huge highlight of my trip. I’m not sure what your budget is, but the YHA hostel, Port O’ Call was a great, inexpensive place to stay. The people working there can help you with ANY travel arrangements or day trips. I had my own room and it is very much like a hotel. The bar there is great, with mostly locals. Just a short walk to the beautiful beach. Enjoy!
