Try Hotel Campo de’ Fiori. It’s located in the Centro Storico. I don’t know what the current price is, but when I stayed there in Oct 1994 I paid $762 for a triple for a week. That worked out to $36 each per night! The location was great (next to the Campo dei Fiori). Best of all was the rooftop terrace with a 360 degree panoramic view of Rome. I was traveling with my parents, sister, and nephew. We did our own thing by day then met to share a bottle of wine and watch the sunset from the roof each night before going out for dinner. I would definitely stay there again. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hi again, > STILL looking for a room in Rome, and am discovering the joys of New Year’s > pricing! Let’s Go. I’ve found them very reliable for hotels. I stayed at La Lunetta myself several years ago. I wouldn’t mind the seediness, but that area is not really close to anything. I could walk to nearly everything from La Lunetta, and I love walking in Rome. Barbara

Hi Barbara, It was while I was surfing the net looking for info on your suggestion that I found this place. I haven’t booked anything yet, but this Gabriele place is only L133,000 for a double with private bath and facils. From the info I found it seems quite new, so I am hoping that is why it’s cheap, not because of an enormous rat population or disappearing guests or something! Where did you find the hotel for your daughter? Word of mouth, books, net? I’m half inclined to ignore the "seedy" rep of the south Termini area for convenience, we will be nering the end of 2 months backpacking and possibly too tired to go any distance when we get off the night train. I’ve been to Rome before years ago, and remember just walking into a hotel that was walking distance from Termini, can’t remember which direction but the area was fine. Besides, I have lived in pretty seedy areas for weeks (in some cases years!), so surely it can’t be too bad if one uses common sense and doesn’t flash money about (by then, I won’t have any money anyway!). I haven’t stayed there myself but a friend whose advice I was seeking did — and said while it was not terrible, it was by far the worst place she stayed on a lengthy European trip with her family. She chalked it up to one more lousy Rick Steve’s hotel suggestion.
Response:
Thanks, but quite a bit out of my very small price range! Melissa

Hi Barbara, It was while I was surfing the net looking for info on your suggestion that I found this place. I haven’t booked anything yet, but this Gabriele place is only L133,000 for a double with private bath and facils.
