Hotels FAQ » Hostel » House sharing info for Sydney wanted

Question:

I’m planning to work in Sydney for 2-3 months on a working holiday, arriving 21st Nov, & was wondering how easy it is to get some accommodation for that length of time. I don’t want to ‘rough it’ in a hostel, but would like either a bedsit or room in shared house – i.e no room sharing. Here in the UK all contracts via agencies are for a min of 6 months, but you can usually move out before in shared houses providing you find a replacement before you go. Is it the same in Oz? Here in the summer alot of people sublet a room while they’re away. Does this happen there? Also where is the best place to look for accomodation. Is it better to look in the local paper, housing agencies, or cafe/shop noticeboards. Any info on prices, areas to look in (i’m working in Sydney Uni), & any info or advice would be much appreciated. If anyone knows of any people who might want a lodger or a room to let out during this time, please let me know. Cheers, Jimi

G’day Jimi Try http://www.newsclassifieds.com.au/ for accomodation.  For Sydney Uni the closest suburbs would be Glebe, Redfern, Surrey Hills, Leichhardt, Newtown.  There should be lots of sub-lets at that time of year as Uni finishes mid to end of November and many students will go home or elsewhere to work etc for three months.  Try a major library for the Saturday edition of the Sydney Morning Herald.  Once here try the Student Union.  Land agents probably only have unfurnished flats.
