Hotels FAQ » Hostel » HELP!! Brisbane / Ayers info needed
Question:
Hi! I’m planning visit Brisbane, and then head towards the Rock, and REALLY need some info, because I’ve drawn zilch from hours of surfing the net. 1. I can’t seem to find any cheap way to get from Brisbane to Ayers. I don’t drive. Are there budget rail services or bus services (Greyhound is out of my budget). 2. I’m planning on visiting Moreton Bay. Which island is most scenic? North Stradbroke? 3. Any other helpful info (accomodation, how to get around, cool places to visit) would be great too! thanks!

Essentially, Ayres Rock (and Alice Springs) is on the route between Adelaide and Darwin. There is no direct route between Brisbane and Alice Springs (Ayres Rock ) other than by air. It is a MAJOR and COSTLY exercise to get from Brisbane to Alice Springs and then to the Rock. That is why I have never done it myself. > 2. I’m planning on visiting Moreton Bay. Check out my website at http://www.powerup.com.au/~baz Moreton Bay is in my backyard and I have seen much of it – BUT it is not exactly an international tourist destination. Don’t get me wrong – it probably should be. But it is not the Barrier Reef. I believe that North Stradbroke is probably the place for you to go – if for no other reason than that Moreton Island is not really accessable unless you are equiped with a 4 wheel drive. I’m curious as to why you want to see Moreton Bay and its islands? Have you heard about it from somebody. It is not the sort of place that you can quickly visit and say that you have seen it. If Greyhound is out of your budget, then so are the alternatives – rail and air. By rail you’d have to go Brisbane – Sydney – Adelaide – Alice Springs and then by coach to the Rock. Brisbane – Sydney will cost you about $90, although there are substantial discounts available. Sydney to Adelaide will cost $152 and Adelaide to Alice Springs will cost $170. This is for the cheapest economy/coach class seat, Cheers David

Unless you find a ride with someone, bus is probably the cheapest (Greyhound or MacCaffeity). I recall doing a 48-hour ride from Townsville to Ayers Rock, very long but comfortable enough on a bus. >2. I’m planning on visiting Moreton Bay. Which island is most scenic? North >Stradbroke?
If you like to explore a bit and camp, you should spend a couple of days at least on Moreton Island – very scenic, and hardly any tourist. But you need a 4WD there (no paved roads, just sand tracks or the beach), plus a 2-hour ferry ride from mainland to the island. North Stradbroke is definitely easier to get to and has a few paved roads so cars are OK.

There is no rail to the rock, but buses are reasonable and comfortable. Accom. is quite expensive at the rock also although backpackers hostel is avail. It is good fun and a "one in a lifetime experience" taking a Harley around the rock at sunset. It is a very spiritual place. Chuck and Mitch were informative guides with the Harleys. The whole trip was pretty expensive, but certainly worth it, however, it was one of those, "once done", never to be repeated things, you know?

Yulara IS expensive, but you can stay at Curtin Springs, about 80kms from the Rock, it is relatively inexpensive and a real experience. Curtin Springs is a cattle station with added facilities. Try iy during that once in a lifetime experience. Graeme http://ami.mtx.net
