Question:

I will be going to Helsinki and Oulu Finland in mid April. Can anyone recommend comfortable hotels in these places in the range of $100.00 per night for a double? Is there any way to buy a discount package from a hotel chain? Thanks! — Buck Burkman Tallahassee, Florida

Hello ! I guess it will be easy for you to find a good hostel in Helsinki !!! Don’t worry about it. I can’t give you as well the addresses but I’m sure you’ll find what you want ! By the way, you can also read the lonely planet book of Finland… You’ll find all the informations you need. One piece of advice : the russian restaurant ("Alexander") on the market place near the sea. Quite expensive, around 80$ by head but you must do it ! Having relatives there, I’ve never taken a hotel in Helsinki. I will say that Eurohostel looks very inviting and un-hostel-like: http://www.eurohostel.fi/euro2/index.htm We once stayed at the Best Western Hotel Appolo in Oulu and were quite content with it. We made our reservation over the web from the USA and it went well: http://www.bestwestern.com/reservations/eu/fi/main.html The Apolllo is a block or so from the train station. Train fares in Finland are attractive, and the price of a sleeper on the overnight from Helsinki to Oulu is quite reasonable. I cannot speak about Oulu, but I have traveled to Helsinki.  Helsinki has a local city travel agency named Helsinki Expert.  Reference it at http://www.helsinkiexpert.fi/en/index.htm  If you reserve a hotel by fax, there is no charge.  If you reserve in person at their Helsinki office, there is a small booking fee ($5-10).  They can get business class hotels, such as the Scandic Hotels, at a reduced price.  Business class hotels in Sweden/Norway/Denmark/Finland are usually expensive. I stayed at two Scandic Hotels for $85 or so (double price) in 2000, but with the fall of the dollar versus European currencies, it might be closer to $100+ now.  Their local office is close to the market square and is in the same building as the Helsinki tourism bureau where you can find brochures for all sorts of activities.  A day trip to Tallinn, only a 90 minute fast ferry ride away, is recommended: great food and beer (Saku is the Estonian national brand – yummy!). By the way, don’t worry about staying at a hotel away from the city center.  I stayed at the Scandic Hotel Kalastajatorppa, which on the map appears to be far out of town.  However, the tram stop is but a five minute walk from the hotel and the tram ride is but a 15 minute ride to the city center.  Helsinki is not a large city (1/2 million population, I think) and you do not have to worry about dangerous parts of town, unlike some cities in the USA.
