My daughter stayed at the following convent in Florence for several weeks in 1999 while she was doing research. It is not terribly close to the center and there is about a 10-minute walk to the bus that goes to the center. However, on the whole my daughter found it satisfactory. It is run more or less like a guesthouse. Convento Suore Santa Marta Via Santa Marta Firenze (39)(055)489089 Barbara

There is a regular city bus line serving the route too. Otherwise, there is a franciscan-run hostel in Via Cesarotti, next to the St. Anthony basilica. A bit touristy, single room+breakfast used to be 50000 Lira.
