I believe that YHA continues to offer their ‘5 nights – 1 night free’ promotion. Which might help keep the costs in line – should one decide to go with YHA lodging. In London Hostels it is pretty much a situation where you get what you pay for. My experience always found the YHA establishments to be better maintained, quieter, and more comfortable than the private hostels. But, your call – your preference.

Not my experience, I have to say in its defence…though I wouldn’t recommend it to the OP, as quiet it ain’t.

Leave The Generator to loud and undisciplined school groups. And it is getting pretty run down and in badly need of maintenance.

YHA hostels in London are probably very good (so I’ve read), but they’re also quite a bit more expensive than other hostels. I’ve posted before that I was quite happy with the Astor Victoria hostel and the St. Christopher’s-Shepherd’s Bush hostel, which are 50-60% of the YHA prices, and which may provide even better prices for longer stays.

Just be aware that a long term rental on an unfurnished house in London costs about 80 GBP per day (4 bedrooms) so if you pay anything less than 50 GBP per day for anything it’s likely to be pretty bad and pretty basic.

Hi, I’m looking at being in London in August this year and need some cheap but clean (and preferably quiet) accommodation. Does anyone know of a good hostel or perhaps student-type accommodation (although I’m no longer a student…)? Thanks, Alice

Many universities will let out their student halls; two I’ve found are http://www.kcl.ac.uk/services/vacbro/ http://housing.lon.ac.uk/site7/Vacation.htm Owain

First off, as you are aware, ‘cheap’ and ‘London’ are exculsive terms. As for the least expensive… at one time you could pitch your tent near Acton (a ways out from Center London, but accessible via the East Acton Underground). I think they called the place ‘Tent City’, but this may only be open during the summer months. Cost for picthing a tent and having access to the facilities was something like GBP 5/day. A Dorm Room in a Private Hostel will cost someplace between GBP10-15 per night. This will be at a higher rate at one of the London YHA affiliated Hostles. (Which for my money are better establishments). BTW: The least expensive places do not attract the best segment of travelers. Keep your identification/currency/credit cards with you at all times. Put them in a plastic bag and take it with you into the shower. No kidding. Check the London School of Economics Web Site. They offer very reasonable deals during holiday periods. Rooms are at their Residence Halls, and they do have some larger units which will accommodate a family group. www.yha.org.uk Check this site for YHA hostels. Most have very good locations, central and near transportation. www.hostels.com/gb.en.lo.html This site will have other information about Hostel in London, both private and affiliated ones. www.bed-and-breakfast-london.co.uk Will give you some B&B information. www.webreaks.co.uk/london.htm Another site www.hotels.in-london.co.uk/ and another.
