Question:
G’day ppl, I’m coming down under in February. I’ll be visiting Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns, and I’m looking for cheap accomodations. Help and suggestions are highly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your co-operation, I owe you one. Nate

You could do a lot worse than using youth hostels Check out the Youth Hostel Association web site for more information: http://www.yha.org.au/There are also many independent Backpackers. You can find them using Google. Gerrit

Depends where you are…most YHAs are fine, some are pretty greasy. MEL and SYD’s main YHAs are pretty clinical and huge (Sydney central is usually booked a couple weeks in advance); the YHA on Upper Roma St. in Brissie is a nice spot but parking is sometimes an issue. Cairns is feral central and has tons of places, but might not be the quietest nights you ever spent.
