Hi, I’ll arrive in Cairns in two weeks for a one month holiday, travelling down to Sydney. I’m interested in diving, hiking, music and a fair amount of partying. Can anybody recommend a good hostel in the centre? Cheers! Marco — —

Hello Marco, My name is Alain, from Belgium. I am just coming back from a trip Down Under. Part of it was spent in Cairns region. I was travelling with a campervan, so I can not help you directly, but you can perhaps contact The Great Barrier Reef Visitors Bureau. They are very efficient and they can perhaps help you. I stayed at the YHA McLeod Street (which is said to be much better than the one on the Esplenade). Personally I really this hostel. The people that work there are very friendly and it has a good atmosphere. The facilities are good, they have a nice pool and right across the street is an exellent shopping centre. Only a 5 minute walk to the esplanade. Have fun… Brenda

"Gone Walkabout" – not quite in the centre, but the people who run the place are *really* friendl and well organised too! hwyl! geraint.
