Question:
Will be down in Sydney in Jan 2001. Heard that the Blue Mountains is superb! But I need help, because I will be on a free and easy trip therefore I need to know if there are any travel agencies that provide a 1 day trip to the Blue Mountains. Better still, does the YHA Hostel in Sydney provide such short trip. And I can’t drive, is it a great disadvantage when moving around Sydney? It’s a really big city.

hi, There is loads of information on the blue mountins at the sydney youth hostel, and they have tours to fit all itinerys. When i was there they had a talk on it, cant remember what day but it may be a regular thing. Or you can do it yourself, get the train to katcoomba, althrough it is a bit of a trek to the view over the 3 sisters. Sydney is more difficult to get round than melbourne, and its a fair walk from the yha to sydney harbour but not to far. paul mac

Much of Sydney is just dormitory suburbs that you won’t want to visit anyway Public transport is not as good as will be found in a really large city. It is not much use for daily travel to and from work unless you work at one of the central hubs, but it quite ok for touring purposes. There are "explorer" buses that circle around the main points of attraction. You pay one fare for the day, and then you can get on & off as you please. It is not one of those cities that have died in the centre, where you need a car to get anywhere. Barry Mossman

The reply below from Barry Mossman is absolute crap!!!! Sydney is filled with plenty of exciting places to visit. There is a frequent train service on every suburban line. Buses fill in the gaps. MOST people travel to work by public transport be it train, bus or ferry. Sure there are remote work locations where a car would be an advantage to get to and from work, but they are the minority. The Explorer buses are designed for tourists not the workforce. The dormitory sububs are filled with restaurants and entertainment of every description. Sydney and its suburbs is one of the largest area-wise cities in the world. Agreed it has not died in the centre, but the suburbs are equally alive! I have lived in Sydney for 59 years and NEVER driven a car. I have never missed one!!! Geoff Lillico

Hi Geoff, It seems that I didn’t word my post too well as I agree with all of what you have posted excepting the travel to work thing. I didn’t mean to suggest otherwise. All I was meaning to say was that Sydney is a great place to visit without a car, and that he should not be put off by the apparent size of the city. Barry Mossman

Thanks. Sorry I misread your previous post. So we both agree that Sydney is a GREAT place – a car is preferable, but NOT essential. Cheers — Geoff Lillico
