Hotels FAQ » Hostel » Best area of Sydney

Question:

Hi We are planning a trip to Australia shortly and we are spending 4 nights in Sydney, which area is the better to stay in around Darling Harbour area or Kings Cross. Suggestions would be appreciated Thanks Steve

Response:

I recently heard Kings Cross referred to as the armpit of Sydney.  A very good description IMO.  It beats me why any tourist would want to stay there. Monte (Sydney)

Darling Harbour without a doubt – more scenic (unless your idea of scenery is the body sort), wide choice of restaurants at Cockle Bay, lots to do by day – Aquarium, Maritime Museum, Chinese Garden, shops etc + monorail to CBD – or easy walk; handy to Chinatown too. Vicki

Response:

Both areas are quite touristy.  The Cross is Sydney’s major red light district with lots of strip clubs, hookers and druggies. If you don’t mind that kind of thing I think it a little less sterile than Darling Harbour. Darling Harbour is less than 5 minutes from Town Hall station and the Centrepoint Tower, Kings Cross is a few stations away.

Well, it depends on your age (and spririt of adventure) and your pocket. You are comparing a Volkswagen with a Mercedes. And that should be reflected in the prices quoted. Cheers Herb    http://www.newsfeeds.com       The Largest Usenet Servers in the World!

Just a bit to remember that like has been said these are worlds apart. A good hotel will cost anyplace from $150 and up in Darling Harbor. The hotels in the Kings Cross area are much more buget, or if you will cheap at $25 for backpackers hostel and up from there. If you willexpand your areas just a little good places can be had that are clean and reasonable.

Response:

It really depends on what environment you want. Kings Cross is kind of seedy but has great nightclubs and is a central location – half way between the city and beaches. Darling Harbour is a built up tourist area just a short walk from many attractions but is a little sterile, not a real suburb really. If you are young, I’d suggest a hostel in Coogee or Glebe. Otherwise try searching www.ninemsn.com.au for some ideas and descriptions of suburbs. Have a nice trip Lisa Before you buy.
