Hotel de l’Europe. I have never stayed there myself, but many people I know recommend this hotel. The location can’t be beaten  also. Sjoerd

Response:

hotel experience – this is a splurge" You would probably love the Hotel Ambassade at Herengracht 341 which is one of the nicest canals you will see in that city.. It’s an old fashioned hotel  (a collection of ten 18th century town houses carefully cobbled together. We like the upper rooms facing the canal which at night are all lite up.. The breakfast room non-smoking) is a treasure with floor to ceiling windows (22 feet in height) and a huge breakfast is served with some of the best coffee in the city. The rooms all have wall safes with all  modcons. I just visited again for three days and it was just  as delightful as when we first stayed there in 1971. They finally have a web site where you can find a description of the rooms, amenities and rates. GOTO www.ambassade-hotel.nl and enjoy Michael Schneider San Francisco, CA.
