Question:
Our flight will leave about 11:50AM. We’ll need 2 hrs. to check in, so about 9:50AM. How far is the trip to the airport from the central area of Rome? Should we try to stay out by the airport? Would like opinions and suggestions from those with experience concerning where we might stay on our last night in Italy (Rome) to facilitate our transport to the airport, also concerning what mode is best. TIA Brenda please post response

You shouldn’t have any problem getting to the airport. My preference is a limo service. Actually they use regular mercedes sedans not limos but a car & driver picks you up and takes you. No problem and not much more expensive. Frank Matthews – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Our flight will leave about 11:50AM. We’ll need 2 hrs. to check in, so > about 9:50AM. at that time of day just take the train out — it is insane to stay at a crummy expensive hotel out nowhere [and then usually wait for an inadequate or late shuttle or pay for a cab] when you can spend your last evening in Rome and then take the train out in the morning. At that time of day it is simple to do. The train station is right inside the airport — couldn’t be easier.

Because our flight was leaving early in the morning, we chose to move from central Rome out to the airport when we left there last summer. The trip via taxi was about 35-45 minutes as I recall. We stayed our last night at the airport Hilton. It is a nice, fairly new hotel that is located near the airport. We had read on their website that you could walk from the hotel to the terminal. We asked and were told that it was a long walk and involved going through a parking deck; they recommended using their shuttle. The shuttle, like most airport hotel shuttles, was easy and convenient. You can certainly stay in central Rome and make it to the airport, no problem. We chose to stay at the airport so that we could sleep later before boarding a trans Atlantic flight. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Our flight will leave about 11:50AM. My daughters often catch flights much earlier than that and they always stay in central Rome. Depending on the hour and how much luggage they have, they take either the train or a taxi. The train costs about $13 per person, and if you have a lot of luggage, a taxi from your hotel to the train station will cost another $7 or so, with a small surcharge for each bag. A cab directly to the airport will cost about $45. If the flight is early in the morning (before 10) and there is more than one person, I would prefer a cab. For early departures, you should arrange the taxi the night before with your hotel. For very early flights, the cab is the only option, as the first train is not early enough for the really early flights. Your flight, however, is not particularly early and is at a time when the trip to the airport by car may hit heavy traffic, so in this case, I would prefer to take a cab to the train station and then the express train to the airport. I would allow a little over an hour for the total trip, so you might want to leave the hotel at around 8:30. The trains run every half hour at that time of day, so if you confirm the schedule, you can time your arrival at the train station so as to avoid a long wait. Tell the cab driver that you’re catching the airport train, as the main entrance to the train station is not convenient for this train, which has its own ticket window near the track and near a side entrance to the station. The following may help you with the cab driver: "Stazione Termini – treno al aeroporto". However, most cab drivers in Rome speak enough English to manage this information. Barbara

Don’t know if this would be an option for you, but we’ve twice stayed at the Marriott Grand Flora on the Via Venetto. Each time, we had the hotel arrange a town car for us. My recollection is that the cost was in $50 range. Our flights were also in the 11 am range — the ride took us about 30 minutes, and was quite pleasant.

I have good experience with the services of Signor Roberto Merlini in transfers in and out and with trips around Rome. Once he arranged for a family of six to go to Sorrento and Capri. As told to me the service was beyond the expected. His prices are very good. His website: www.merliniautonoleggio.com Enjoy it, Ismael
