Question:

I am so thankful that He is as Mighty, Great, Loving today as He was yesterday, and as He will be tomorrow.  What a great solace that is.

Devotional Guide For the week of February 24, 2002 Why the Virgin Birth? Sharing with one another is a faith-builder. To Read: Deuteronomy 19-21 To Know: "For I the Lord do not change, therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed. From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them.  Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts…" (Malachi 3:6,7) Renewal is always needed in the church. This needed renewal does not skip certain denominations. Rather, it crosses denominational lines. For many years I served as Vice President of the United Church People for Biblical Witness. The U.C.P.B.W. was a grass roots organization for theological renewal in the United Church of Christ. We were dedicated to calling the churches back to the Bible. One day each year all the renewal executives met together for twenty-four hours at the Pittsburgh Airport Hotel. Each of us would share the details of what was taking place in our respective denominations. Without exception our stories were the same. A study of the past shows that over the centuries nothing much changes. In the days of Queen Elizabeth I, a group of reawakened Christians called Puritans banded together for church renewal. As long as it is today, the human heart will be prone to stray from the truth. Because God does not change, we can expect him to do again among us what he did amidst his people in the past. To Do: God has never changed his mind. His is an eternal purpose. What he has done he will do. The Lord will renew his work. Faith is the instrument through which God is pleased to do his will. When we renewal executives met to discover that every denomination was experiencing the same awakening our faith was strengthened. It is important that we share with one another what the Lord is doing in order to build up each other’s faith. To Ask: Father, keep reminding me of the importance of sharing with others what you are doing today.

Question:

Our flight will leave about 11:50AM.  We’ll need 2 hrs. to check in, so about 9:50AM.  How far is the trip to the airport from the central area of Rome?  Should we try to stay out by the airport?  Would like opinions and suggestions from those with experience concerning where we might stay on our last night in Italy (Rome) to facilitate our transport to the airport, also concerning what mode is best.  TIA Brenda please post response

Response:

You shouldn’t have any problem getting to the airport.  My preference is a limo service.  Actually they use regular mercedes sedans not limos but a car & driver picks you up and takes you.  No problem and not much more expensive. at that time of day just take the train out — it is insane to stay at a crummy expensive hotel out nowhere [and then usually wait for an inadequate or late shuttle or pay for a cab] when you can spend your last evening in Rome and then take the train out in the morning.  At that time of day it is simple to do.   The train station is right inside the airport — couldn’t be easier.

Response:

Because our flight was leaving early in the morning, we chose to move from central Rome out to the airport when we left there last summer. The trip via taxi was about 35-45 minutes as I recall.  We stayed our last night at the airport Hilton.  It is a nice, fairly new hotel that is located near the airport.  We had read on their website that you could walk from the hotel to the terminal.  We asked and were told that it was a long walk and involved going through a parking deck; they recommended using their shuttle.  The shuttle, like most airport hotel shuttles, was easy and convenient.  You can certainly stay in central Rome and make it to the airport, no problem.  We chose to stay at the airport so that we could sleep later before boarding a trans Atlantic flight. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Our flight will leave about 11:50AM.  We’ll need 2 hrs. to check in, so > about 9:50AM.  How far is the trip to the airport from the central area of > Rome?  Should we try to stay out by the airport?  Would like opinions and > suggestions from those with experience concerning where we might stay on our > last night in Italy (Rome) to facilitate our transport to the airport, also > concerning what mode is best.  TIA > Brenda > please post response

My daughters often catch flights much earlier than that and they always stay in central Rome. Depending on the hour and how much luggage they have, they take either the train or a taxi. The train costs about $13 per person, and if you have a lot of luggage, a taxi from your hotel to the train station will cost another $7 or so, with a small surcharge for each bag. A cab directly to the airport will cost about $45. If the flight is early in the morning (before 10) and there is more than one person, I would prefer a cab. For early departures, you should arrange the taxi the night before with your hotel. For very early flights, the cab is the only option, as the first train is not early enough for the really early flights. Your flight, however, is not particularly early and is at a time when the trip to the airport by car may hit heavy traffic, so in this case, I would prefer to take a cab to the train station and then the express train to the airport. I would allow a little over an hour for the total trip, so you might want to leave the hotel at around 8:30. The trains run every half hour at that time of day, so if you confirm the schedule, you can time your arrival at the train station so as to avoid a long wait. Tell the cab driver that you’re catching the airport train, as the main entrance to the train station is not convenient for this train, which has its own ticket window near the track and near a side entrance to the station. The following may help you with the cab driver: "Stazione Termini – treno al aeroporto". However, most cab drivers in Rome speak enough English to manage this information. Barbara

Don’t know if this would be an option for you, but we’ve twice stayed at the Marriott Grand Flora on the Via Venetto.  Each time, we had the hotel arrange a town car for us.  My recollection is that the cost was in $50 range.  Our flights were also in the 11 am range — the ride took us about 30 minutes, and was quite pleasant.

Every chain in the book is located around Fort Lauderdale airport and the port. If you aren’t particular about your chain, I’d use Priceline. Even if you end up with one of the hotels that doesn’t have a shuttle, distances between the airport, hotel and port are so small, that cabs won’t really run you too much. Disregard Priceline’s pricing suggestions. Bid whatever you want for whatever level (2, 3 or more stars) hotel you want. If you don’t get it, inch up your bid little by little. Priceline allows you to pick your area pretty specifically down there. Good luck. Lee

Try Holiday Inn Express on 17th St.and Comfort Suites around the corner of 17th on Dixie (or Federal); don’t remember what it’s called.  Both are inexpensive, both have pier transport and both have breakfast included. Arlene <—usually drives to the pier, but did stay at Comfort last year

Question:

Hello fellow cruisers, I’m writing to ask for any suggestions of a nice, ‘reasonably priced’ hotel near/at LaGuardia airport in NY.  (I’m going for a long weekend land trip but thought maybe some of the cruisers from NYC and area might have stayed at an airport hotel pre-cruise — and might have some recommendations). We’re hoping to keep to our budget of $110 or less (a night) — this has become a challenge in Manhattan itself (looking at short term apartment rentals there), but maybe it’s do-able out by the airport? We’ve got an 8am flight on a Monday in April, which is partly why we’re interested in getting out to the airport the night before. Thanks in advance for sharing your recommendations and thoughts…. –Barbara in Toronto (who would also appreciate recs for NYC as well — we’re looking at $130 or less in Manhattan – might be difficult, we know!)

Response:

Hi – We stayed at the Sheraton at the airport and parked there for the week. They provided a shuttle to and from the airport and parking was in a locked lot.  I think that it came out to about $125 for the night & parking.

While rates in New York have plummeted recently, $110 is still very low.  I would be quite leery of any non brand hotel in that price range.  Over by the airport is the Wyndham, rates there start at 116, it’s an OK place, and a Courtyard for $130 or so. It all depends on the exact date (and call the hotel directly and ask, don’t trust the 800 numbers) as to what specials they are offering that weekend.  I assume you are talking us dollars here. If you are in New York for a Sunday, try to catch a matinee play, half price tickets for same day show are available at the TKTS window in Times square, the day before at the Bowling Green Booth (replaces the one in the World Trade Center).  It’s a great way to see a Broadway show on a budget (though don’t expect the Producers at half price).  Details are over at http://timessquare.nyctourist.com/broadway_tkts.asp Lots of museums for very little money, take the subways instead of a cab, it’s really not that hard to not spend that much in New York, though it’s also very easy to spend lots.

The post-9/11 citywide promotion is set to end 3/31, but you might want to check it out to get a feeling for prices.  http://www.redwhiteandblue.com/hotels.htm  Of course, you should check Travelocity, Frommer’s hotel discounter, Orbitz, Expedia, etc. for deals. We were in NYC two weekends ago–I think tourism is going to be very strong there this spring.  I would not hold my breath on deep discounts, especially because you will be in the city the weekend after Easter, which many refer to as the traditional start of the spring "shoulder" travel season. FWIW, we have for years stayed at the Manhattan East Suites Hotel properties http://www.mesuite.com/Index.cfm — can usually get in for under $200/night, and more spacious than the average hotel room, nice amenities, well maintained with good security, features for business travelers, kitchens/kitchenettes a plus. We love midtown, walking and subwaying–others might not like the locations. All around excellent value for the city. Have fun planning your visit! Diana Ball near Houston, TX

I have just booked the Pan American in Elmhurst for just $89 a night. I have gotten good feedback on this hotel and it does offer a shuttle to/from LGA. They have also worked with me via e-mail to get me adjoining rooms. It also is located near to the subway line and Q60 bus stops in front of the hotel. Not sure it’s much of a "walk around type neighborhhod" but I’ll be spending my time in Manhattan anyways.  Besides it should be interesting to view the 12 lane Queen’s Blvd that is referrred to as "Death Blvd" that the hotel is situated on,lol

You can stay at the Hotel Pennsylvania for $79 US a night, right across from Penn Station/Madison Sq. Garden.  It’s not near LaGuardia, obviously, but is in Manhattan and below your price target. Jeff

Is there a hotel in the airport and if yes would someone have a link to it? Thanks Pierre

The hotel on the airport property, with a connecting passageway, is the Regal Airport hotel.  Typical rates are something like $150US a night. You can sometimes get special rates at a bit under $100. http://www.regalairport.com/mmm/regalairport/en_US_main.html Cathay Pacific has a hotel in nearby Cathay City, and there are Cathay shuttlebuses from the airport. http://www.centuryhotels.com/hotels/cxh_location.htm Other than that, the Airport Express train takes you to Kowloon and the Central District, where there are lots of hotels.  The ride to the Central District is about 25 minutes, and the fare is about $20US each way.   If you want to go to the Central District and have more time, the least expensive way to and from the airport is to take a bus to the nearby Tung Chung MTR rail rapid transit station, and ride it instead. It only takes a few minutes longer. It actually takes the same route as the Airport Express, but makes a couple of additional stops, and costs about 1/4 the price.  There might be some new hotels in the Tung Chung area, since development has been booming around there with the opening of the new airport.

I would guess there are exactly zero people from cruise ships that will be departing TPA that early in the morning. What cruise would end at 6 or 7 AM on a Sunday? Michael

Response:

> How long is the delay for an 8:00am flight on Sunday from TPA?

Mornings tend to be very busy at TIA.   I’ve often found some pretty long lines trying to get through security.   They do call out departure times, however, and if you are within 10 minutes of departure, you will be bumped to the front of the line.   In any case, the longest I’ve ever waited was something like 40 minutes — irritating beyond belief, but other than irritation, not a huge deal, really.   If you are checking bags on a busy morning, the lines to the gate agents are pretty horrible.   Add another 45 minutes if you have to check bags, and it’s busy. >What day/time do most of the cruises dump their passengers?

Late morning to early afternoon, IIRC. HTH, Donna

Response:

I’ve never taken a cruise.  I figure that the ship would get in sometime around 6pm and they would work all night so it could leave the next day.  About half the passengers would get flights out that night the other half would crash at the airport hotel and take off early the next morning. >         How long is the delay for an 8:00am flight on Sunday from TPA? > What day/time do most of the cruises dump their passengers?  I seem to > remember one very bad Saturday with a very long line… >I would guess there are exactly zero people from cruise ships that will >be departing TPA that early in the morning. Monday mornings are *incredibly* busy.  If you want to avoid the 45 minute line for security, arrive at security up until 5am.  It’s amazing — there is no line until 4:45, and then between 4:45 and 5:00am this enormous line, circling around the entire shuttle arrival area, appears out of nowhere. I’ve flown into/out of TIA on a Sunday morning only a couple of times, but both times there was a fairly significant line — especially for baggage check in.    This could be a fluke, given the number of data points I have (two), but that has been my experience.   That monday mornings are busy is well researched.  I’m always at TIA on monday  mornings.  :) My experience, for what it’s worth.  :) Donna – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Michael

Probably fine, because JM is consistently late out of LAX.  I’ve never seen the 10:45pm departure actually happen before midnight, when the flight isn’t cancelled entirely.  Relatives flew them last summer- their flight was cancelled out of LAX.  The short version is they were put in an airport hotel overnight, got an early morning call to report back to the airport, and after several hours of total confusion, the flight was cancelled for good.  They were put on an AA flight to JFK, and a JM flight to MBJ. Arrived almost 24 hours late.  Since Sandals Resorts and JM are owned by the same company, they were comped the day they missed. On the way back, one seat was freshly soaked in vomit.  The airline didn’t understand why this was an issue.  My relative sat on a jacket to avoid getting soaked.  The day after he got back, he became very sick for about a week (may or may not have been from the seat). Hope your flights go smoothly…and assert yourself at the first sign of problems. Ken Ishiguro

I just went and checked the rates, and for double occupancy, it is $95.00/day to use their facilities from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Hi Jo-Ann, That is what they charge for a room between 10 & 6.  I don’t know what they charge for the pool, though.  I am sure you could give them a quick call and find out. Best regards, Ray LIGHTHOUSE TRAVEL 800-719-9917 or 805-566-3905 http://www.lighthousetravel.com
