No, I mean if you walk up to the reception desk on a Saturday and say "Hi, how much would a room for two people for the night be?" the reply is "$105 plus taxes." If I use Priceline to find a hotel in the area, they typically accept a bid of $40. Richard

Still doesn’t indicate that PCLN is discounting hotels (per their "sale") more than they already have.

So you normally paid Priceline $105 for this hotel and you just paid $40? FWIW, I *currently* can’t get the Doubletree Seattle for less than the $32 it’s been going for in the last 6 months or so.

I haven’t been to that site – but thank you, I’m going to bookmark it and take a look at it. The only thing I’ve used Priceline for has been rental cars, and I’ve done very well at getting deeply discounted rental cars. I typically look for the cheapest rental in the category I’m looking for, and then place a bid for 30% less than the best price with an AAA rate – or whatever I find to be the cheapest (sometimes it’s an AAA rate, other times it’s a promo rate on the web site, etc.). The first time I used priceline for an auto rental, I made an extremely lowball bid and it took. Ever since I’ve been using Priceline for most of my leisure automobile rentals. I did try a bid on a hotel once (I tried to bid $50 for a top quality hotel in the CVG airport area and had no luck – I even upped the bid to $60 after adding on another geographic area by CVG and had no luck). On that particular trip, I ended up getting a room at the Marriott Cincinnati Airport Hotel for about $75 plus taxes and that included a park n’ fly. The most I’ve paid at that property during a weekday was $145 for a park n’ fly, but I suspect I could of done better at another nearby hotel or with priceline (however, I ended up staying at that price since I like the hotel and the park n’ fly option, which easily saves me $20-$50 in airport parking fees depending on length of the trip). The hotel is only a few minutes from the CVG terminal by shuttle and the shuttle is good at immediate pickups and delivering you right to your automobile in their parking lot upon return. They also serve refreshments in the shuttle, which is a nice touch on a hot summer day. One Marriott property I stay at .. at least once a month .. is the TPA Intl Airport Marriott and I’ve never paid more than $69 a night there (weekend). Same goes for the Tampa Marriott West Shores, which is right next to the airport (3 miles) and you can actually see the airport and runways from your hotel room (depending on which side your room is on). Last time I stayed at the West Shores location they gave me a coupon for a return stay that was quite good as well. Marriott also keeps running the "Take Two" promotion where you get two free weekend nights at any category 1-4 property by making 3 stays. I just finished my ‘3rd stay’ again and should have two more free nights coming. The "take two" promo is a great deal and the free night coupons are easy to use (never have had any problems with availability or the property I wanted as far as category 4 properties go). Last but not least, if you have an Entertainment Card, there are a lot of Marriott Residence Inn’s with an Entertainment rate and I often am able to get them for $50/night if the location has an Entertainment Rate (some do, some don’t). I got a room at a Hilton in Salt Lake City last year (only one night, Jan. 30) for $40. To me that’s as good a deal as you can get. > Their commercials (hotels.com) are atrocious and annoying — while many > hotels do have different prices for the same room, whom in the right mind > would pay rack rate (as they seem to be comparing their rates to rack > rates) — but most of the time I can find published rates that are just as > good with most properties (with various other discount programs like AAA / > Entertainment / specials directly from Marriott). Might be I’m lucky, but I got a very good deal on a room in LA through Hotels.com. The downside: I had them fax the confirmation and recieved fax spam for a long time. John W.

Quite a bit. 25-60% if not more, IF you bid right (see www.biddingfortravel.com ) > get placed in a Marriott, do they allow you to earn Marriott Rewards (I > presume no, but it never hurts to ask). I primarily stay at Marriott hotels
no, but you might get lucky > and the prices I’m able to get through various discounts like AAA rates, > Entertainment book rates, etc., are usually on-par with the lowest rates > I’ve found at "discount sites" like hotels.com which seems to be a total > joke.

: The first time I used priceline for an auto rental, I made an extremely : lowball bid and it took. Ever since I’ve been using Priceline for most of : my leisure automobile rentals. I’ve used Priceline for rental cars only once (bid accepted, haven’t rented it yet) My first bid I wasn’t able to save even the 20% they advertise you can save. This rental I did get failed at a bid of $25 – Priceline counter-offered $29 and I wound up getting it on a re-bid for $27. That turned out to be exactly 20% off the best AAA rate I could find. <snip> : Last but not least, if you have an Entertainment Card, there are a lot of : Marriott Residence Inn’s with an Entertainment rate and I often am able to : get them for $50/night if the location has an Entertainment Rate (some do, : some don’t). The motto here is: don’t bid too high on Priceline. Set a limit above which it’s not worth the (maybe meager) savings. If you can get a Residence Inn for $50, limit your bidding to $30 or $35 or whatever. With hotels, I usually find I can save 50% or more the best price I’d get anywhere else; it’s not worth saving $10 to be locked into a hotel reservation. But to save $40/night or $50/night and I’m fairly sure about the trip – it’s well worth it. John W.

No sale at all. I and others started bidding in markets we’re familiar with and it’s not giving any breaks on prices from previous bids on at least 4 hotel chains (Marriott, Hilton/Doubletree, Starwood/Sheraton and Hyatt).
