OK, are we talking about 5:00 pm – midnight on Aug 30? That is a Wed., and with traffic in L.A. that is always a factor. And do you really mean until midnight? Or do you have to be back in the airport by 10:00 pm, 2 hours prior to your flight (this is normal for international, you must be there 2 hours before flight time, or even 3 hours if there is heightened security for any reason). I would go for a short (HA!) trip to the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. I would love to pick you up and take you there, but on a Wednesday that just isn’t possible. (I leave work at the earliest at 5 pm on weekdays and it would take at least 1 1/2 hours on a Wed. to get to the airport from my office in Glendale.) Hmmm… how about you guys taking a taxi from the airport to the Third Street Promenade and I can figure out how to meet you there? There are lots of trendy restaurants, lovely open-air walking, the Santa Monica Pier (which you will recognize from many, many movies and television shows), a famous antique functioning carousel, a big shopping center (same as anywhere in the U.S. I’m sure), a superabundance of weirdo’s and panhandlers (watch your wallets!). If you want the dinner to be something more "California", I could take you to Gladstone’s in Malibu. It is not walking distance from the Third Street Promenade, but by car would be about 10 minutes. That is a fish restaurant, very full of the California attitude, right on the water with the waves crashing outside your window and seagulls watching you scarf your food. Then I can get you back to the airport after dinner… if you have to be there at 10 pm, we should leave by about 9 pm, just to be safe (probably about 1/2 hour from there, but you never know when there will be a traffic holdup). The taxi from the airport won’t be cheap as nobody uses taxis in L.A. Guessing here I would say maybe $30.00? I know it is about $50.00 to where I live and I think that’s about half-way. I hope the airline will keep your luggage for you. Make sure everything is very clearly marked with luggage tags (using an address OTHER than your home address; I use my business post office box and include the phone number) and that you also have it marked on the INSIDE in case something happens to your luggage tags. It wouldn’t hurt to include a copy of your itinerary on the inside. That way it can still reach you if you get separated from it for any period of time. It is best when having a connecting flight to check your luggage to the connecting city, pick it up yourself from the luggage claim, then recheck it yourself on that next flight. That way you don’t have to worry about it getting missed in the transfer. Make sure you pull off any luggage destination tags from any prior flights… and check what they are putting on your luggage for the next flight destination. You want to make sure your luggage is going where you are. :) Of course, DON’T put tempting things or valuables in the checked luggage. Don’t make the luggage look too attractive, if you know what I mean. Carry your med’s in their original prescription bottles with you at all times, in carry-on, not checked. If you feel like you need it, ask for the wheelchair service at the airport. They will even go with you to help pick up your luggage at the claim area after the flight and will whisk you through the airport so fast, you won’t believe it. On the China side, I wouldn’t try for the wheelchair service. Things are different over there… GOOD LUCK! And hey, maybe some other people in this area would like to join us for dinner? Best regards,
