Hotels FAQ » Airport Hotel » Layover in Tokyo? 16 HOURS!!
Question:
I anticipate travelling to India in November, and am thinking of taking Northwest upto Tokyo. The last time I took this route, I actually stopped for a few days in Tokyo on work, so was not too worried about the steady (and rapid) bleed of money from my wallet ($25 for a bus ride and so on)….besides, now the Yen is stronger…. This time, I’m on my own. So what is the cheapest way to reach downtown Tokyo from the airport? And how much is it? I’ll be there 5 pm till noon the next day. They will provide some airport hotel, but I may stay with friends in town. Please email. — Tandem Computers

In June ‘93, the airport bus was Y 2700 one way, and the Narita Express was Y 3050. I liked the express. bruce — "… make the suspension adjustable and they will adjust it wrong — look what they can do with a Weber carburetor in just a few moments of stupidity with a screwdriver." – Colin Chapman

The train goes directly to Narita. Not sure what current price is. Hassan

The bus is cheaper than the train. Both are convenient. The train station is sort of under the domestic wing of the terminal and it connects in to the regular local system in the Tokyo area. I think I remember the bus is called a limousine bus. They run frequently from in front of the international terminal and go to several Tokyo destinations – mostly in front of various hotels – which are convenient to local train and subway stations. Make sure and reserve a spot for your return. They often fill up. I’ve used the bus several times.

The train station is sort of under the domestic wing of the terminal and it connects in to the regular local system in the Tokyo area. Limousine bus costs about 2700 yen, Narita Express costs about 3000 yen. JR-line local train cost about 1500 yen. Keisei Skyliner costs about 2000 yen. Keisei-line local train costs about 1000 yen (perhaps 970 yen). The fares may be incorrect, but near the correct one, I suppose. From Narita Airport to center of Tokyo, it takes about 60 mins. by Narita Express (APT to Tokyo stn.), or Keisei Skyliner (APT to Ueno stn.). By Keisei-line local (Ltd.Express) train it takes about 75 mins. (APT to Ueno). By JR-line local (rapid) train about 90 mins. (APT to Tokyo). By limo bus, it depends on traffic. Maybe 90 mins to 120 mins. (APT to Shinjuku). Limo bus goes to major hotels. Narita Express and Keise Skyliner departs 2 times an hour. Keisei Ltd.Express 3 times an hour. I use Keisei local train (Ltd.Express) because it’s the cheapest and convenient. Keisei line is connected to Yamanote-line at Nippori and Ueno. — — Katsutoshi Ike

The trains go all the way to Narita these days. When you come out of customs towartds the big lobby, right in the middle you will see the stairs going downstairs to the station. Trains can be taken from there to Tokyo station (about $1000), or you can even go upto SAhinagawa on the yokohoma line. It depnds on which subway line you want to catch for your friend place. The hibya line transfer comes even sooner than Tokyo station.
