Clarified as being Westbound, i.e. towards downtown Boston.

The current Exit 24 ramp from I-93 North to the Callahan Tunnel and Government Center has closed.  Drivers headed to Logan must take the new Exit 20.  The Callahan remains accessible from I-93 South and local streets. > I though that the Ted Williams was only for authorised vehicles ? The Ted Williams is open to all now.  The toll, 3USD, is collected outbound only. > I’ve now been put on the 08:15 am BA flight instead of the AA, so an airport > hotel or a very late night on the town and a very early checkin are > increasingly looking like sensible options (the latter sounding like more > fun). > Does the exit route from the rental car outlet change or is it still that > horrible left across 5 lanes of traffic past the side of the car park and > then out of the callaghan ? Not sure since I don’t rent cars there, but this link has the latest on construction: http://www.boston.com/traffic/bigdig/

Are you trying to drive to BOS (airport) of the city?  And from where? Part of the I-90 tunnel into the airport zone is open.  I think you will be o.k. if you get to the rental lot by 7 a.m. Or better yet, why not bid for a 3* airport hotel at priceline.co.uk?   You can get the Hyatt or Hilton and one other.  Don;t need to worry about the next day either.

You shouldn’t have major problems before 6am. The new ramp linking I-93N to the Ted Williams Tunnel opens Saturday (25th), that would make it even easier. I would agree though, that staying at an airport hotel would be much better. If nothing else, at least you can drop off you car the night before and sleep longer :-)      - Manuel.

The link from the Distressway (I-93 from the south) to the Ted Williams Tunnel opens tonight. Be aware that I-93 can take easily half an hour from Braintree to the South End though, even at 7am — and if you’re catching the AA London flight, be also aware that I’ve turned up at checkin for that flight at 6:50am and only just made it. (This was a couple months after 9/11 though) And DON’T follow any old directions that tell you to stay on I-93 to exit 24 for Logan — that exit closes next week.

Thanks for the replies, so are you saying that the callahan tunnel is no longer an option ? I though that the Ted Williams was only for authorised vehicles ? Is it now (or after this week) going to be open for general traffic – Is there still a 2 USD toll ? I’ve now been put on the 08:15 am BA flight instead of the AA, so an airport hotel or a very late night on the town and a very early checkin are increasingly looking like sensible options (the latter sounding like more fun). Does the exit route from the rental car outlet change or is it still that horrible left across 5 lanes of traffic past the side of the car park and then out of the callaghan ? Didn’t someone say recently that the horrible left is not really the correct way to get out of the airport, if so which is the correct way ?

Does anyone know what time the early rush starts into BOS, I’ll be after a 9:00 international flight, with a rental car to drop off. I’m driving up from somewhere south. I suspect the roads might be clear if I aim to be at the car rental at 6am ?
